In the previous blog post at www.elissaheyman.com/blog, I wondered out loud about a pictograph made December 6, 2019, called Shifts 2020. In particular, the word “cloning” and the puzzling image it seemed to be labeling. What was that golf tee-shaped triangular thing in the middle of the purple sphere, with blobs of color – “what was that?”, I wondered as I made it.
I found the above image online in an article about a new kind of mRNA vaccine, and it looks to me like what I drew in the middle of the purple circle: at http://theconversation.com/coronavirus-a-new-type-of-vaccine-using-rna-could-help-defeat-covid-19-133217.
I am pretty sure the Shifts 2020 pictograph is conveying two different realities: one on the right side depicting the U.S. with its shuttered doors, and the left side one labeled “Asia” with images that look like they have to do with recovery. When I first made it, I thought the lightning bolt had to do with how fast the virus moved, but on that side, it also means something that could create a fast recovery. Maybe the new cure comes out of Asia, or maybe it’s just on the left “Asia” side to mean it’s a cure for the corona virus. But coming out of somewhere!
